A discreet late-July meeting in Manila has brought together the legal team representing the Sulu claimants in the USD 15 billion Sabah dispute and a group of foreign private intelligence consultants.
Sources say the gathering, held weeks after a critical European hearing, raises questions over the role of international operatives in shaping the case’s next moves. The meeting was reportedly attended by lawyers Cohen and Mason, alongside consultants with past links to Western intelligence.
Recent discussions in Manila, held weeks after the July 7,
2025, hearing in the Paris Court of Appeal, underscore the complexities of the
ongoing arbitration between the Sulu heirs and Malaysia over the Sabah
territory claim. These talks involved legal representatives and private
intelligence figures with operational backgrounds in Southeast Asia, signaling
continued activity in this high-stakes dispute.
The Sulu claim originates from a historical 1878 land lease
agreement, which has evolved into a significant legal and diplomatic matter.
Malaysia maintains its rejection of the claim, emphasizing its sovereignty over
Sabah, while the Sulu legal team asserts the legitimacy of their case under
international arbitration frameworks.
A ruling from the Paris Court of Appeal is expected on
December 9, 2025, which may clarify the next steps in this long-standing
dispute. For further details, visit knowsulu.ph.
