Photo by Pablo Rodriguez\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final session of the Global Parliamentarians\u2019<br \/>\nInquiry into a Fossil Fuel Phase Out demonstrates a shared commitment to the<br \/>\nurgent task of tackling the climate crisis with the scale, solidarity, and<br \/>\nurgency it demands,\u201d said US Senator Ed Markey. \u201cOn the eve of the G7, this<br \/>\ncommitment is more critical than ever. The G7 countries account for more than a<br \/>\nquarter of current global oil, gas, and coal production but have the capacity<br \/>\nand responsibility to phase out fossil fuels. Photo by Pablo Rodriguez\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>G7 Funding Fossil Fuels Over Clean Energy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The largest economies continue to bankroll the climate<br \/>\nemergency and shirk from their duty to fast-track clean energy. G7 countries<br \/>\nprioritize fossil fuels over clean energy, with a staggering $25.7 billion<br \/>\npumped into fossil fuel projects annually, compared to a mere $10.3 billion in<br \/>\nclean energy. Additionally, G7 countries provided a shocking $200 billion in<br \/>\nfossil fuel subsidies in 2022, while major G7-based banks financed a staggering<br \/>\n$700 billion in fossil fuel projects last year alone.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/vritimes-public.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/production\/ea32f53d5e17e4aa42384a4ef5f86b703a24ad0febf9ee4d53e67760b00dba98\/Parl%20G7%2012Jun2024%20-%2019.jpeg\" alt=\"Parliamentarians from across the world convene in Bari, Italy on June 12, 2024 to call on G7 leaders to phase out of fossil fuels and fast-track renewables. Photo by Pablo Rodriguez\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe G7&#8217;s continued financing of fossil fuels is a<br \/>\nblatant contradiction of their climate commitments and the Paris Agreement,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Canada Senator Rosa Galvez. \u201cThey have the power and responsibility to<br \/>\nlead the global phaseout, and have prioritized energy transition in their<br \/>\nLeader\u2019s Summit, yet they&#8217;re backtracking on their own promises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Developing Nations Demand Action <\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe historic decision at the COP28 climate conference in<br \/>\nDubai to \u2018transition away from fossil fuels\u2019 has seemed to become little more<br \/>\nthan a faint memory. The world must seize the moment to phase out fossil fuels<br \/>\nfor good, and G7 countries can and must lead by example,\u201d said Tanzania MP<br \/>\nNusrat Hanje.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made some progress but we have work to do at<br \/>\nCOP29 in Baku &amp; COP30 in Belem. We need to hold the G7 to account. We need<br \/>\nto move from billions to trillions in climate finance, including the energy<br \/>\ntransition,\u201d said Bangladesh MP and Minister of Environment, Forests and<br \/>\nClimate Change Saber Chowdhury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVulnerable countries and communities cannot afford to<br \/>\nwait for 2050 for the G7 to commit to a fossil fuel phaseout and a rapid<br \/>\ntransition to renewable energy systems. These countries must also uphold a just<br \/>\ntransition, scale up their delivery of climate finance, and strengthen their<br \/>\nNationally Determined Contributions,\u201d said Zambia MP Anthony Kasandwe.<\/p>\n<p><b>A Call to Seize the Moment<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent G7 communiqu\u00e9s are widely perceived as<br \/>\ninadequate, replete with loopholes and their countries have continued to renege<br \/>\non their commitments. We cannot afford to be unambitious. We have to act now,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Philippines MP Raoul Manuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe G7 plays a very big role to fund climate action<br \/>\nincluding renewables. But how much of this money is reaching the hotspots? Can<br \/>\nwe listen to each other to find a way forward for humanity?\u201d asked Uganda MP<br \/>\nLawrence Biyika Songa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cG7 countries just don\u2019t want to walk the talk. We need<br \/>\nto engage finance ministries and be involved in budget discussions. We need to<br \/>\nwork with civil society more,\u201d said Sierra Leone MP Rebecca Yei Kamara.<\/p>\n<p><b>Launching the Amazon Inquiry <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The hearing was held back to back with a preview of the<br \/>\nGlobal Parliamentarians\u2019 Inquiry for a Fossil-Free Amazon, which aims to<br \/>\npressure governments, public institutions and corporations within and working<br \/>\nin the region to scale up pledges and actions to stop oil and gas expansion in<br \/>\nthe world\u2019s largest rainforest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is urgent that we protect the Amazon from industrial<br \/>\nactivity and global warming. We must therefore phase out fossil fuels in the<br \/>\nregion and globally. Oil and gas production in the region has caused not only<br \/>\nenvironmental degradation but also social destabilization, health impacts,<br \/>\nhuman rights violations, and corruption. We need to find out who funds and who<br \/>\nbenefits from the exploration, and we need to make them accountable,\u201d said<br \/>\nBrazil MP Livia Duartee, who hails from Belem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the new Amazon inquiry, we aim to investigate<br \/>\nprogress in the fossil fuel phaseout in the Amazon region and explore<br \/>\nopportunities for phasing in renewable energy in a just and equitable manner,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Bolivia Senator Cecilia Requena. <\/p>\n<p>A recent study shows that from 2016 to 2023, 38 of the<br \/>\nworld&#8217;s 60 largest banks have financed oil and gas exploitation in the Amazon<br \/>\nto the tune of $11.15 billion. Twenty-four of the 38 banks are from the G7 and<br \/>\nhave bankrolled 80% of the total.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil MP Livia Duarte, Bolivia Senator Cecilia Requena,<br \/>\nand Canada Senator Rosa Galvez led the media launch in Bari. They are joined in<br \/>\nthe Amazon inquiry committee by Brazil MPs C\u00e9lia Xakriab\u00e1 and Ivan Valente,<br \/>\nColombia MPs Andres Cancimance and Juan Carlos Lozada, Ecuador MP Jahiren<br \/>\nNoriega, and Peru MPs Sigrid Bazan and Ruth Luque.<\/p>\n<p>The inquiry will be formally launched in August, the<br \/>\nfirst-year anniversary of Ecuador&#8217;s popular consultation vote to stop and ban<br \/>\noil exploitation in Yasun\u00ed National Park in the Amazon.
