Japan’s Chemical Industry at a Turning Point: Technology and New Ideas Open the Door to the Next Stage

The chemical industry is undergoing a major transformation. Green transformation (GX) and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping industrial structures, while growth opportunities are emerging in advanced materials, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals. At the same time, the production facilities and equipment that underpin the industry face mounting challenges, including labor shortages, aging infrastructure, and the need to improve productivity.

Meeting these challenges requires more than new technologies alone. It also calls for combining innovative ideas with the equipment, machinery, and process technologies developed over decades, drawing on the expertise of companies that support the industry. Bringing established technologies together with new approaches can help the chemical industry move into its next stage of development.

Against this backdrop, INCHEM TOKYO 2027 will spotlight emerging growth themes such as AI, GX, and advanced materials, bringing together technologies and ideas that can help shape the future of the chemical industry.

INCHEM TOKYO: A Comprehensive Exhibition Covering Japan’s Chemical and Plant Engineering Industries

The name “INCHEM” derives from “International Chemistry.” Held biennially since 1966, INCHEM TOKYO is a B2B exhibition showcasing technologies and products for chemical processing, production, and plant engineering. It serves as a business platform for the chemical industry, bringing together solutions across the supply chain, from chemical process machinery and production technologies to plant engineering, environmental solutions, safety, maintenance, and digital transformation (DX) and AI.

INCHEM TOKYO is Japan’s only comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the chemical industry.

The previous edition featured 315 exhibitors across 625 booths and attracted approximately 12,000 visitors. Attendees represented a broad range of industries, including chemicals, petrochemicals, energy, pharmaceuticals, steel, semiconductors and electronics, plastics, and food and beverages.

Five Specialized Exhibitions in 2027

INCHEM TOKYO 2027 will comprise five specialized exhibitions, covering a broad range of technologies and solutions for the chemical and plant engineering sectors.

37th Plant Show: Chemical process machinery; resource and energy transformation and engineering; rotating machinery and piping; instrumentation, control and monitoring; environmental solutions; laboratory and analytical instruments; staffing, education and outsourcing; and specialized media and information services.

14th Innovation in Water Management Water Treatment and Materials: Water treatment equipment, functional materials, water treatment chemicals, and technologies for removing, degrading, and treating organofluorine compounds such as PFAS.

6th Explosion Protection and Safety Measures: Explosion-proof products and design, explosion-proof IoT, occupational safety, risk assessment, fire prevention, and smart safety management.

4th Plant Maintenance and Repair: Maintenance and inspection solutions, predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, non-destructive testing, repair materials, inspection drones and robots, and AI-powered technologies.

2nd Plant DX/AI/Security: Digital transformation for plant design, generative AI, process simulation, digital twins, data utilization, and cybersecurity, including operational technology (OT) security.

Note: The product and technology fields listed for each exhibition zone are examples of intended exhibits and may differ from the actual exhibits.

Connecting Japan’s Chemical and Plant Engineering Industries with International Technologies.
